Therapy Fatigue

Therapy Fatigue - How much is too much.

Let me ask you - how many therapy sessions do you or your PWD have this week? How many support workers are visiting you or are helping you in the community? Do you get all the homework done from school/therapy/work each week?

Do you find yourself wishing you could reduce the work load? Are you finding yourself exhausted of the therapy and support workers?

Perhaps you have reached therapy fatigue.

There are a number of ways to manage this - some work, some do not. Sometimes it just isn't possible to change things but being aware of the situation can help.

See below for some options - Can you go to fortnightly sessions and have distinct homework that you can do - this needs to be written and easy to fit in your day. - Is there an option to have therapy at school if the person is a child - therapy is education, if it is doing the right job it should be helping all facits of life including school. But be aware not all therapy providers are willing to travel or work in school. - Can you combine therapy and pleasurable activity - is there an exercise class at your physio location that will support you to do the physio required while being in a group environment and getting your exercise at the same time. - Are you able to train a support worker to be a therapy assistant and reduce sessions outside the home that way? - Can you combine two therapies into one? - Do you need to decide what is most important and just work on one thing at a time?

Don't forget you can take a therapy break - perhaps you could do 1-2 therapy sessions a week alternating therapy or even have 1 sessions and alternate terms.

This of course is totally dependant on your therapy providers but most therapy providers are willing and able to have a conversation to figure out what will work for everyone!

If you need help or would like to discuss something to do with the NDIS please get in touch via email - Elizabeth@afasupportandtraining.com or via msg and we can set up a time to talk.
